Implementing Resilience in Transportation: Examples and Lessons Learned

Seas and subways, rivers and bridges, or dust storms and highways – transportation infrastructure faces risks in every region. Across the country, transportation officials are learning how to ensure that infrastructure, and the people, organizations, and communities that manage it, are resilient in the face of increasing stresses and shocks. Definitions of resilience can vary, but common lessons emerge regarding coordination among multiple entities, institutionalizing best practices, and planning for transportation systems with resilience in mind. Experienced professionals in transportation recovery and planning will provide resources and considerations for planners seeking to implement sustainability and resilience in transportation. Melissa Savage from the Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials will talk about guidance from the Resilient and Sustainable Transportation Systems Technical Assistance Program for state DOTs to understand and prepare for the potential effects of climate change and extreme weather events. Joe Segale will talk about improving transportation system resilience to floods at the Vermont Agency of Transportation. The presentation will describe actions that VTrans identified and implemented following Tropical Storm Irene to improve disaster response and recovery and the development of methods and tools to plan proactively to improve system resilience. John Chow will share lessons learned in transportation resilience at a local, state, and national level.
