How to Mobilize and Turn Volunteers Into Leaders in Your Community (Florida Chapter)

Keeping volunteers engaged is key to any community planning project that relies on the altruistic investment of its residents. In Florida, AARP has had success in turning core volunteers into viable leaders who help educate local communities about the benefits of planning healthier and livable communities for residents of all ages. For Hillsborough County (Fla.), December marks the one-year adoption of its Vision Zero Action Plan. Progress has been made in all four of the action tracks and plans are underway to continue the important work of eliminating traffic injuries and fatalities. This session will explore AARP’s best practices in utilizing its core volunteers and how by allowing them to develop deep relationships with community leaders benefits everyone. It will also delve into how Hillsborough County is elevating its Vision Zero initiative beyond the agency and into the community where the movement can grow. We will explore strategies such as coalition building, citizen engagement and project identification that can help transform a planning initiative into a volunteer-led movement.
